We’ve all been there, waiting by the shower doing the hand test to see if the water is warm enough wondering why it takes so long for the water to heat up.
Several factors play into how fast your hot water gets hot.
1. Water Flow Rate to Faucets and Shower Heads
2. Distance from Water Heater
3. Pipe Size
4. Size of Home (square footage, single/multi story)
5. Horizontal or Vertical Piping
6. Gas or Electric Water Heater
What can you do to ensure a quicker heat up of your water?
- Perform preventative maintenance of your water heater. Have your trusted plumber evaluate your water heater, complete flushes as recommended by the manufacturer
- Replace your water heater. If your water heater is showing signs of age, such as rusting, sporadic warm water, or leaking; its most likely time to replace or upgrade
- Upgrade to a tankless water heater. A tankless water heater doesn’t hold water in a tank, instead it heats the water as it flows through the heater
- Insulate your water pipes. Water pipes that are well insulated keep the water at an average higher temp of 3° vs. non-insulated pipes
- Replace faucets and/or shower heads with higher flow rate ones. Faucets and/shower heads with a higher flow rate produce more water in a faster time frame. The downside to this is you are using more gallons of water per minute.
