What is a Cleanout?

Cleanout

As a local Charleston plumbing company we get several calls a day for sewer back ups. One of the first things we ask the homeowner is if they have an accessible cleanout plug. Some homeowners know exactly what we are talking about; however, many don’t.

A cleanout is a threaded plug that when unscrewed allows access to the sewer line, allowing the plumber to easily insert a mechanical snake or push camera.

They cleanout should stick out of the ground a few inches so that it can be easily found. They are usually 3 or 4 feet from the foundation of the house in the flower bed. Unfortunately, many home owners cover them up with plants and mulch making it almost impossible to find when needed.

Not only will the cleanout save you money and time when you have to call a plumber out to snake the sewer line, it can also provide relief if you happen to have a backup with a house full of people. Simply unscrew the cap and allow the water to run over into the flower bed so that the fixtures inside the house can drain while you wait on the plumber to arrive.

If you do not have an accessible cleanout or can’t find it chances are the plumber will have to pull the toilet or dig up the sewer line in order to run the mechanical snake down the line. This additional work will cost extra so it is a good idea to mark or take note of where your cleanout is located and if you have rental property, make sure your tenants know too.

If the sewer line has to be located and dug up to clear the line it would be a good idea to have the plumber install a cleanout while the line is exposed. This will save time and money in the future.
