Why Backflow Prevention Matters

The public clean water supply is strictly controlled and tested for purity. However, if an emergency happens in the public plumbing network, it can cause water in residential systems to reverse direction and flow back towards the public water system. This can be caused by different kinds of events.

How Backflow Prevention Systems Work

When there is a pressure drop in the public water network, water from a sprinkler system, a hose, or a toilet tank can be drawn back into the community water supply if there is no working backflow preventer. The system works on the principle of a one-way valve, allowing water to pass through it to the house but closing if a problem with the water system causes water to flow back towards it.

Backflow Prevention Certification

In South Carolina, the Department of Environmental Services grants certification to plumbers that obtain this training, and to retain their certification they must attend periodic refresher courses.

Backflow Prevention Testing Process

In order to determine what exactly is happening inside the plumbing at the point of the backflow prevention system, the technician begins by shutting off the water supply. The testing equipment then connects the system’s valves to a number of gauges, which indicate levels of water pressure when the water flow is turned back on.

Protection for Public Water Supply

A backflow prevention system stops water that has been supplied to homes or businesses from flowing backwards and re-entering the public water supply. Because the valve system is an emergency “failsafe” measure, it is only used very rarely, but needs to be in good working order at all times.

Look forward to doing business with this company and especially Travis in the future. The person who schedules your appointment will narrow it down to a couple hours which is highly useful when waiting.

Dean has come to our home a couple times now to fix various issues. He always gets the job done, and in a timely manner. When there was a mysterious odor coming from our toilet, we weren’t sure if it was the toilet seat (an easier, cheaper fix) or if there was an issue with the flooring around the base of the toilet (definitely a more expensive fix). He could have easily started with the “tougher” fix and charged more, but instead he told us he would start with the easier thing first and take it from there. We definitely feel we can trust him, which can be hard to find.
